Golden Oaks is a ministry to all seniors.
We meet on the third Friday of each month for Lunch.
Each month everyone on our list is phoned to remind them that Golden Oaks is happening and their names are recorded if they affirm their intention to attend. We are thankful to Anne Sheppy and her group of ‘callers’ and registrars who look after this task.
Between 70-90 people arrive around 11:30 am and find a name tag already prepared for them. This gathering time is used to enjoy punch and an opportunity to chat.
When they enter our lower auditorium the seniors are always impressed with the decorations which are a based on a theme, either related to the month, eg. Valentines, St Patrick’s day, Easter, Fall, Christmas, or the theme may be related to the topic the speaker will be addressing.
We are thankful to the group of ladies that help supply the material and do the decorating. At Noon our Chairman, Mr. Dave Waldie, welcomes everyone and puts them into the mood with a series of stories that are also related to the theme. A good laugh makes for healthy appetites and soon everyone is enjoying a splendid meal. Olive Scott heads up the kitchen and has a wonderful group of dedicated ladies who enjoy fun and fellowship as they prepare and serve the meal. Regular aspects of our program are always, a door prize, one for the men and another for the ladies, the recognition and a little gift for those whose birthdays are in that month, and a puzzle or quiz set at each place.
The main feature of the program is a 40 minute presentation by someone or some organization from our community. Sometimes these topics are informational; police, medical, fire service, or issues specifically valuable to seniors. We also have missionaries and others who have spiritual journeys to tell us about. The topics are varied and always interesting. We always finish with a short devotional.
Our goal is to lift up the name of Jesus and serve the senior community. We want to encourage our seniors to reach out to others so that we include seniors from other churches and those who have no church.
