Music is a very important part of corporate worship.

Ephesians 5:19-20 says: “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Psalm 34:3: “Glorify the Lord with me, let us exalt his name together.”

Psalm 2:11-12: “Worship the Lord with reverence and rejoice with trembling. Do homage to the Son, lest He become angry, and you perish in the way” (NAS). Only when we are captured by an overwhelming sense of awe and reverence in the presence of God, will we begin to worship God in spirit and in truth. Then, and only then, may we expect visitors to our services to exclaim, “Surely God is in this place!”

The goal of the music ministry is to glorify God by helping to lead the congregation in corporate worship using a variety of psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Our emphasis is on congregational participation, so we strive to select music that is singable. In addition, music is selected carefully to ensure that each song is theologically accurate, doctrinally rich, and musically excellent. Our focus is God and His glory.

Thanks to all of those who meet to practice and prepare the music for Sunday mornings.

On Thursday nights three study groups made up of college & careers, high school students and Phil & Barb Horton’s Bible Study group meet together at 7:15 pm for worship in the sanctuary. Becky Horton and a team of musicians lead a 45-minute worship time.

Drama is used in our services from time to time. Val Fuller works with a small number of people writing and preparing short presentations that help us to focus on various aspects of the sermon. Also the drama team is used to promote different activities and programs at Oaklands.

“When we believe that we should be satisfied rather than God-glorified in our worship,
then we put God below ourselves as though he had been made for us, rather than we for Him.”
Stephen Charnock (1628-1680)
