Nehemiah Sermon Series - Winter 2010
The Book of Nehemiah documents the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls, and the return of good governance and there-introduction of the Law of Moses.
Walls can be a friend or a foe. They can provide refuge, or they can stand in the way. Some walls are physical, others are spiritual. Spiritual walls are ones that hinder the work of the church. Nehemiah, in his role as governor of Jerusalem, rebuilt its broken walls, and its gates. He also re-established good governance and re-introduced the Law of Moses.
For the next twelve weeks, we will listen to various speakers open up for us the truths contained in this fascinating look at Israel as it was after exile, as the walls of the holy city were rebuilt, more than four centuries before Christ's birth. Nehemiah surveyed the broken city secretly by night, making preparations, organizing workers, and ensuring that the foundations would be sound. Nehemiah faced powerful opposition from within and from without, but he prevailed and the walls were rebuilt. Completion of the walls opened the way for Nehemiah's next project: to rebuild Jerusalem's system of good governance and re-introduce religious observance of the Law of Moses. These aspects of Nehemiah's work will occupy our attention over the course of this series; and as we approach Palm Sunday we plan to reconnect with the Book of Luke and Jesus' 'Triumphal Entry'.
